To offer the communities and artists of East Kent the opportunity to experience, enjoy, take part in and develop high-quality artistic work both inside and outside the theatre building, in the strong belief that such activity will nurture skills, build credible aspirations, lift hearts, challenge minds, improve society and produce great new work.
We encourage our audiences, artists and participants to share in debate, discovery and celebration. We work hard to foster relationships with new audiences and participants of any age, race, belief or background. We believe that the development of creative skills and artistic awareness makes a tangible contribution to the well-being of our community.
• We invite work – about 50 nights of professional theatre each year including a regular monthly strand of work aimed specifically at Families & Young People.
• We make work – still the only Theatre in the region to produce, cast, direct, technically support and creatively lead its own professional Xmas show!
• We help others make work too!
• We are in schools and working in places where real people are through our education and community programmes
The theatre dates from 1787 and was radically altered in 1874 by Jethro T. Robinson (father-in-law of Frank Matcham, the famous and prolific theatre architect who along with his two protégés are responsible for more than building 200 theatres before 1915).
The Theatre Royal is operated by YOUR Leisure Kent Ltd (formally Thanet Leisueforce).
